Powerful drama telling the story of Tom Ward, born in 1800 in a remote Yorkshire weaving community, who moves to a mill town and sees great changes.
Tom is brought up to work a hand-loom, but he finds the work, and the village life, stultifying. He feels he needs more in life - although he cannot say what. Rejection in love propels him from his village.
Tom falls on his feet. He gets a job helping to maintain a steam engine in a textile mill. Power-looms have replaced hand looms. The small town is on the verge of a massive expansion.
Thirty years on, Tom has prospered, but there are also victims of the revolution. A dramatic accident involving a child worker in the mill forces him to face this reality. An evocative story taking the viewer to the heart of the industrial revolution and its consequences.
