Supermarkets - the retail powerhouses of the 21st Century. Their people are crucial to their fight for high street dominance. This film looks at the working lives of four staff in Sainsbury's.
THE PERSONNEL PERSON:
Jenny does one of the most important jobs in any supermarket - not filling shelves but filling JOBS. She monitors the performance of managers and has to make sure she's got ENOUGH staff at work every day. Her computerised scheduling system is vital.
THE BAKER:
Glenn is head of one of the most popular destinations in any supermarket - the bakery. Glenn's team carry out every stage of the baking process - from making the dough and baking the bread to wrapping the finished loaf.
CHILLED FOODS:
Jane is in charge of chilled foods. Her team has only thirty minutes to get products out of the chiller room and onto the shelves. And there's only a limited selling time before they spoil. A computer system helps Jane work out when she needs to cut prices.
MAN ON THE RUN:
Young Ollie is a trouble-shooter - whatever a checkout operator needs to happen, he has to do it, from checking prices to getting change. Customers keep his life interesting - he has to deal with one man who's worried about how unhappy the potatoes are!
SATISFYING JOBS?
Not every one finds supermarket work satisfying. Ex-employee Lucy paints a very different picture of what it's like to work in Sainsbury's.
