What was the background to the clash between Henry II and Thomas Becket?
This film creates a powerful picture of Henry's personality. He is known as the king responsible for Becket's murder, but he was also a strong king, who laid the foundations of the British legal system. We look at how these reforms brought him into conflict with the church.
We also look at his relationship with his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, one of the most remarkable women in history.
Dramatised reconstructions bring these conflicts to life. But we also go behind the scens to see what the actors think of the characters they play. In the process, we learn how little, as well as how much, we know about history.
